It’s a bit difficult to cover every type of tool you will need to tackle your DIY painting project in a single post. We have talked about the House Painting Tools you will most likely need for interior and exterior painting jobs but today, we wanted to go a little more in-depth with the painting tools that are not only essential; but help you get the job done more cost-efficiently as well. Let’s get started with the painting equipment list.
House Painting Tools and Equipment
-
Tape Measure
Why would you need a tape measure for a painting job? You’re not going to be cutting any wood or anything, right? That’s right but a tape measure is one of the tools that are essential if you want to save the most money on your project. You’ll need a tape measure to measure the surface area of the wall you are painting so you know how much paint you will need for the job.
-
Small Brushes
A lot of people don’t think about the fine touch-ups that will most likely be required after a DIY paint job. They buy large brushes and rollers thinking that will be all they need. But in order to save time and make sure you can do more detailed work, go ahead and pick up a pack of small paintbrushes while you’re at the hardware store.
-
Sandpaper
The sandpaper will be essential if you are aiming for a smooth texture. Most primers will leave an uneven surface so you will need some 80-220 grit sandpaper to smooth it out. Depending on the surface, you may even need a power sander.

-
Stirring Implements
Paint separates in the can when it is left standing for a long time. That’s why hardware stores have mechanical paint mixers that they use before you buy paint. And mixing the paint right before you use it is important. Otherwise, you will end up with uneven paint or a color that you weren’t expecting. Luckily, all you need are a few simple stirring implements like stirring sticks. You can buy a pack for very cheap at the hardware store or you can use any firm object of appropriate length to reach the bottom of the paint can so long as it’s clean.
-
Spout
A pouring spout can save you money by minimizing paint waste. Pouring spouts for paint cans are cheap and easy to use. They not only minimize paint waste, but they also minimize annoying messes.
-
Specialty Paint Brushes
In order to get maximum paint coverage without having to buy more paint, you should have angled paintbrushes so you can reach tight corners more efficiently. We recommend having at least one 2 or 3 inches angled brush handy for trim and corners.
